iHeater thermistor: tape, sleeve, and what the sensor should actually measure

Well, I’m definitely not going to rewrap it with tape

Well, maybe some other solution?

That’s exactly what we’re talking about — ideally it would be without tape, for example a thermistor in a metal sleeve, mounted not between the fins but somewhere in the “body” of the heater.

Actually, the tape recommendation came from clumsy people who were shorting the thermistor by squeezing the fins. I just can’t explain it to every single one of them, even though I drew how to insert it. So when someone starts doing my head in over a thermistor error, I tell them to go get some tape. I’m not taking a shot at anyone personally, but otherwise there’s no way :man_shrugging:, especially if the person doesn’t understand that they caused it themselves. So tape is kind of the universal cure here.

A sleeve seems even worse to me in terms of thermal inertia than tape (though I could be wrong).
Then you’d have to smear it with thermal adhesive or thermal paste.

A sleeve is usually brass or copper anyway, and good thermistors are filled inside with something conductive.
I’m sure a thermistor in a sleeve would work better, it’s just that there’s basically nowhere to mount it on the heater.

Well, damn. I’m writing that the sleeve would need to be slapped onto the heater with thermal paste for it to work, and you’re replying with the exact same thing but backwards.
Bravo. We have the perfect dialogue

And what is it supposed to measure? The air, or the temperature of the outgoing air?

The heater, so you don’t miss an overheat.

Well, right now you’re not worrying about the lack of thermal paste anyway.
And thermal paste isn’t the main thing — the main thing is pressing it properly against the heater.
And right now the contact pressure is pretty lousy too.

The bead works faster; if you want to use a sleeve, no problem, I tried it, I didn’t like it.

It’s not so much for overheating as for the PIDs, since the target at the heater might be, say, 65C, and the heater itself has pretty noticeable inertia, so the control loop speed matters.
