Linear regulator vs DC-DC and how important ease of adjustment is

@pavluchenkor (https://t.me/pavluchenkor) tricky question) why was the decision made to use a DC-DC module instead of, say, a linear regulator like the AMS1084CM-5 with a fixed 5V 5A output (input up to 20V)? It only needs a couple of capacitors on the input and output (basically it’s an LDO), right?)

Any linear regulator dissipates heat “in itself.” And as a rule, it gets pretty hot because of that.

There it doesn’t really matter, but it’s easier to hook up without a multimeter… Although if it’s soldered onto the board already, then there are no questions.

I honestly can’t imagine how people build things without a multimeter and a scope. On my own boards I bring out voltage test points so you can probe them right away and check, because sometimes it’s not convenient to reach in, and who knows, maybe you got a faulty part.

я вообще не представляю как люди без мульта и осла собирают. А на своих платах вывожу тестпоинты напряжений, чтобы сразу ткнуть и посмотреть, то подлазить иногда не удобно, то малоли чё битое попалось

No, of course not. But a preconfigured one doesn’t guarantee it’ll work either.

A DIY project doesn’t guarantee anything by itself. And an adjustable version probably has an even lower success rate.
